In the winter of 1919, the U. S. Department of Justice under Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer conducted a series of raids to attempt to deport anarchists and left-wing radicals from the U. S. , largely in response to increased global political agitation and serious bomb threats against U. S. officials.

Under the direction of Mitchell Palmer, the US Attorney General at the time, these raids and subsequent arrests were conducted to deport alleged leftist radicals and anarchists from the country.
