Matthew was a tax collector, Luke a physician, and John a fisherman (along with his brother James and fellow-disciples Simon Peter and Andrew). It is less clear what Mark did, but the Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible notes that he was very likely a teacher as well as a messenger.

Matthew was a tax collector - a profession despised by the Jews. Luke was a doctor. Mark was a Roman, was not an apostle of Jesus and his occupation is not stated in the bible. John was a fisherman and was with his family fishing when Jesus asked him to be his disciple.

Matthew's occupation was a tax collector; Mark's occupation is not mentioned in the bible specifically, so it is unknown exactly; Luke's occupation was a physician; and John's occupation was a fisherman.

Matthew was a tax collector, which is important because tax collectors were reviled at the time. Making a tax collector a disciple was a bold move for Jesus. The Bible doesn't give Mark's occupation. Luke was a doctor. John was a fisherman, which is important because Jesus called his disciples to be fishers of men.

Matthew was a tax collect employed by the Roman occuptionally force. This caused him to be a very hated person by most jews Mark's occupation was never spelled out but was most likely a fisherman. Luke was a doctor in that timeframe. And John was a fisherman in business with his brother the apostle James and the apostle peter.
