The television series takes place in one location while the books began in Wisconsin and ended in South Dakota. The main characters are similar (Ma, Pa, the girls, the Olsens), the show has many characters not in the books. The setting of the stories, post Civil War west, is similar, but events differ. And Michael Landon could NOT play fiddle!

One of the main differences is Little House On the Prairie, the TV series, was set in Walnut Grove, Minnesota for several years. In real life, the family only lived in Walnut Grove for a short period of time before moving on.

Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote 'The Little House on the Prairie' books, the TV show was loosely based on her books and the writers used creative license for interesting TV.
