Castles were part of military strategy because they were often built on hills so that watchmen could see any attackers coming to the city and could sound an alarm and begin a counter-attack. Secret passages in some castles allowed monarchs to hide, while "murder holes," moats, and drawbridges helped keep intruders out. Castles were also used as weapon stores.

The purpose of a castle is to provide a fortification against invasion, usually by having an insurmountable stone wall. A "siege engine" was used to throw destructive projectiles.
