On Veterans Day and Memorial Day veterans and retirees are encouraged to wear their awards and medals. Military awards may be worn on civilian clothes. The choice of full-size medal or miniature is individual. Members of the American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars wear miniature medals or small replica pins of ribbons on their hats or vests.

Some veterans and retirees wear their military awards/medals on civilian clothes for gatherings of a military theme or significant holidays, like Veterans Day and Memorial Day. They can wear the full-sized medals or miniature versions. Veterans and retirees are encouraged to display their awards and medals on these occasions.

Veterans and retirees of the armed forces are permitted to wear their medals on their civilian clothes. The medals should be displayed in the same manner that they would be displayed on a military uniform. This is particularly encouraged on Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, etc and is acceptable at most functions such as funerals, parades, etc.
