What was the role of Maryland in the War of 1812?

During the battle of Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Francis Scott Key penned verses which would later become the USA's national anthem. The battle was also a victory for America, defending Baltimore from the British Navy. Baltimore was a key port for American trade. This was a key victory in a war that America had lost.

The British chose the Chesapeake Bay as a point of attack on the state of Maryland, and subsequently, Washington DC. The British engaged American soldiers at Fort McHenry, and it was during this battle that Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star Spangled Banner."

President of America in 1812 ordered General Winder to command a newly created Tenth Military District that defended Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

Maryland was involved in a few significant skirmishes with the British during the War of 1812. The Chesapeake Bay was seen an inroads for the British and numerous battles occurred.
