Bobby Thigpen recorded his 57th save for that season. This established a new major league single season record. This record stood until 2008 when Francisco Rodriguez topped it with 62 saves. Although the record does not still stand, Thigpen's season is considered the best by a closer.

The Cincinnati Reds upset the Oakland A's to win the 1990 World Series, winning their first World Series since 1976.
