Baseball bats have historically been made of wood, however the wood type has varied over the years from oak to hickory to ash. Bats were also much heavier in the old days.
In early baseball history they were mainly made of hickory. In the 1930s to 1940s they were made of white ash, and towards the 1990s they were made of maple.
