Farms used to be much smaller than they are today. Farmers had to work the land using horse or donkey to pull plows and wagons. Much more relied on human effort instead of having mechanical help from tractors or other machines. The farmers relied on wisdom passed down from elders on how to do things instead of advice from government.

At its onset, farming was closely related to gathering. Over time, the domestication of animals helped usher in an new age of farming where people didn't work as hard.

It was extremely labor intensive. If one worked in the fields, it was literally sunrise to sundown to raise enough crops to survive the winter. If the crops failed, one starved. This is why many people moved to the cities - you worked indoors and were always paid.

Farming was very excruciating and exhausting, since there were no tools to automate the farming process. Because of this, farm products were very expensive.
