Many things can happen, you can sprain a hand or finger, you can trip and sprain an ankle or break a leg. Bowling is thought to be a sport free of injuries however much can happen if you are not careful. A ball can be drooped on ones foot causing a break.

The most common injury is a sprained wrist or torn ligament due to holding and manipulating a heavy bowling ball. This is why all professional bowlers wear a wrist brace on their throwing hand as part of their equipment. Another common injury is torn muscles in the thigh, as that's where a bowler leans his weight during throws.

Bowling is not a very strenuous sport, but it does involve repeating the same motions over and over, stressing the same muscles. So you can incur repetitive stress injuries -- sore elbows, wrists and shoulders. And a 16-pound ball can break a toe if dropped.

Also, centimeters away from your ankle is perfect release, and many bowlers hit their ankles (I've done it). It is very painful and usually you can't walk on it for a few hours. Or the ball could bump off your thigh and leave a bruise. Not as bad though.
