The most likely culprit was feline leukemia. Unlike human leukemia, feline leukemia is virally spread and easily trasmits from the mother to its litter.

It probably was'nt an infection at all. Did the cats have hair? They may have been born prematurely. If the Mom cat didn't try to open their sacs and take care of them, then she knew they were not going to make it. They always know if the babies are okay or not.

There are many infections that cats can get, therefore endangering the kittens. The cat could possibly get feline leukemia, which is deadly to the mother as well as the kittens. Another disease would be feline aids which is also eventually deadly.

Well, kittens can die of worms, which are transmitted in womb and in milk. Kittens are also very susceptible to respiratory infections, feline herpes virus, feline leukemia virus, feline infectious peritonitis, or birth defects. Kittens with failing health must receive vet care as soon as possible as they are very fragile animals.
