The minimum time that has to be served is 8 years. The active duty time varies from 15 months-5 years depending on the service joined. After active duty, a soldier is put in the Reserves, or in Individual Ready Reserves until the end of the 8 years is up.

The military today has no minimum time that you must serve; it is entirely voluntary. However, there is a minimum amount of time served that is necessary to qualify for certain benefits, which varies depending on the benefit. For example, in order to qualify for military G. I. Bill benefits, you must have served for at least 2 years.

Theoretically, a person could serve as little as a single day. This would involve getting injured and being immediately medically discharged, both of which are radically unlikely. Similarly, people can wind up with very short terms if they are kicked out for misconduct. If a person serves their term, however, it is at least two, and more commonly four, years.
