The United States has had a capitalist economy. It has more recently moved toward socialism, with government takeovers of companies like General Motors and telling other companies what to do, such as telling Bank of America to buy Merrill Lynch.

The United States is a capitalist society. However, it may have recently involved to a form of crony capitalism, in which those connected to the government get favored political protection, sweetheart deals, government funded bailouts and favorable arrangements for political officials in exchange for favoritism in law. It may also be evolving toward socialism, with government mandating private economic activity.

I believe it's a mixed market economy. This allows all business to compete in fair environment. This also allows all businesses to provide it's best in order to obtain maximum profits. What makes the United States a mixed economy is that it is a democratic country. There is much freedom in a mixed economy.
