Shih Tzu were bred in China/ Tibet to be temple guard dogs and companion dogs for Chinese royalty. The name translates as Lion Dog. However, currently they are bred to be companion dogs. They are classified as a Toy Breed by the American Kennel Club and United Kingdom Kennel Club.

The Shih Tzu breed is part of the Companion and Toy Dog group, specifically in Section Five: Tibetan Breeds. They are thought to be descendants from a Pekingese and Tibetan Dog cross, though exact origin is uncertain. While technically in the Toy group, there is no recognized toy or tea cup Shih Tzu.
