You can buy a special shovel at any hardware store with a good tool department. The shovel you want for digging small trenches has a longer shape with a flat cutting edge instead of the rounded cutting edge of most shovels. This works well for digging small trenches.

Well of course a shovel can is typically the best tool for digging. However it that is too wide you might try using a matic or a small pack shovel of some sort.

you can use a trenching shovel which cost about 25 dollars, or rent a trencher which would cost more but be faster and eaier, there are several different kind of trechers the appropiate one could be recommended by the rental store,each work differently and are for differnt types of trenches

if the trench is long or the soil is hard rent a ditch witch. Short trench get a trench shovel at your local hardware store
