If I dig up some pines and replant them, will they live?

I don't want to disturb them if they'll die.

If you can do it right, they will thrive. For every inch in diameter at the ground, you need to move about a foot in diameter of soil. Then about 18 to 24 inches in depth. Keep the root ball together and move the trees with a tarp. Plant at the same depth. Water and mulch.

when digging up any tree one needs to be very cautious of the roots and to keep it nice and moist to prevent the roots which are the life line of the tree. your best bet is to keep the roots wrapped when moving it to prevent any damage to them.

I have much experience with digging up and replanting pine trees. They are very difficult to transplant successfully, even if you do everything by the book. Pines generally like very well drained soil, almost gravel-like. I would say 65% of the pines I have transplanted did not make it. I live in prime pine-growing location, still many of them die.
