Make sure the tines on the aerator are made of iron or something that is heavy and very sturdy. Make sure the bearings can be greased. Also, make sure it is heavy enough to penetrate the ground or has a space to add weight.

It is best to look for a aerator made of quality materials. Look for one with no, or minimal plastic, preferably made of steel. This should last a long time. It is also critical that the blades are close together, so that the maximum amount of grass is covered during aeration.
