What steps do you take in identifying an artist?

I have a painting that is unsigned.

If the work is framed and it's possible to do so without damaging the work of art, you could carefully remove the frame in order to check around the edges/back - there may very well be identifying information that you cannot see at the moment with the frame still on.

Since we have the luxury of the internet, I would start there and research the picture or style of era the artist might be in. Also I would take it to an art gallery where they could help me as well.

I would suggest you go online and do a search of the general description of the painting and see if the artist was mentioned. Other than that there is not much that you can do.
