The dinner guest will be used to following the host's lead for eating and drinking. They will only eat, drink, and put down their napkin after you have.

French etiquette includes keeping your hands on the table at all times, bread is placed directly onto the tablecloth not on the plate, tear bite-sized pieces from the bread instead of biting the whole thing, if asked to pass the salt or pepper only pass whichever is asked for, not both. Also, wipe your plate with bread after each course.

Your guest, having taken leave of France, will abide the etiquette of his host. Greeting, smiling, hand-shaking, being gracious and accommodatng -- standards in the US and in France.

French dining etiquette, requires keeping ones hands upon the dining table, whenever they are not being used for eating, or drinking, and always keeping the elbows off of the table.
