Secure locks for windows and doors are two important features. Check out your neighbors. Make sure that smoke alarms are installed and working. Check to see if there are security alarms and/or cameras.

You need to secure all windows and doors and other openings into the apartment. Windows and sliding patio doors will be the biggest problem. You can install hardware to prevent them from opening from the outside but an individual can easily break the glass. Installing a security system may help for insurance claims but will do little to prevent crime.

You should make sure you have a strong frame around your door. You should have 2 locks and one of them must be a dead bolt lock that goes into the frame. I prefer a metal frame as it is the strongest. HAving a camera around the apartment is also a deterrent for crime.
