Verbal rental agreements are legally binding. In most jurisdictions there are statutes and regulatios that control verbal leases. If the verbal rental agreement makes you nervous, you can make sure you understand the terms of the lease and then write a letter back to the landlord stating your understanding of the terms.

Verbal agreements are usually a bad way to go. When you only have a verbal agreement, either side could misconstrue what the other said.

Verbal rental agreements are not as good as written ones, it's not a good idea. The terms of a rental agreement are complex and can't be correctly executed verbally.

Verbal rental agreements do stand in court. But it is better to get it writing - especially before you pay your deposit or rent.
