The wrong side of a knit object will generally feel "bumpy", it is referred to as the purl stitch and looks like a bunch of little bumps. If you're making clothing it should be the "inside" of the fabric, with the knit stitch (non bumpy) side facing out towards the audience.

the wrong side only matters if something specific in the pattern needs to all be on one side. most patterns will indicate which is the right side (rs) and which is the wrong side (ws) of the pattern. if working the stockinette stitch, the wrong side is the side that will look like horizontal lines.

The 'wrong side of knitting' on plain knitting (stockinette) is also called reverse stockinette stitch and can be used as the right side of the garment, especially when using fancy 'furry' yarns as it is more effective. It is produced by knitting alternate plain and purl rows.
