shopping

Question by  Vel (15)

Is it just me, or is knitting all of a sudden popular?

I notice a lot of knitting shops and groups popping up in my city.

These things are cyclical. Counted cross-stitch was the rage for a long time, then knitting re-emerged. Crochet comes and goes, as do so many other crafts and needlework forms. Dollmaking is popular again, too.

I have also noticed a resurgence of interest in knitting and I think it is because of all the fashionable and fun yarns available these days: eyelash yarns (some of them with metallic threads), bobble yarns with pompom-type bumps, yarns that create stripes as you knit - all gorgeous!

Interest in crafts tends to be cyclical and often happens when there are financial crises. When people cannot afford a lifestyle with expensive entertainments and frequent new clothes, crafts again become popular. The blessing of financial crises is that they generally revive creativity and community which are positive things.

Knitting and other traditional crafts are increasing in popularity. There is a general shift to spending more time at home and with friends instead of focusing on consumerism.

Knitting has made a comeback. Deborah Macomber wrote "A Good Yarn" about a knitting shop and classes, and it is now popular among the younger set for relaxation.

Knitting has been around forever. But now the new thing is to get together with other women and have a great ladies nite out. You can meet new friends, have coffee or tea, learn to stitches and just have a great time. It can also be a quite time from the busy day.
