What could be wrong if my cat's face is swollen on one side and he has a cough?

You are right, your cat probably just got into a fight. It face is swollen probably by getting batted by another cat, or it could have a nail stuck in its skin causing an infection. The cough could just be from it's throat being sore from hissing.

give him half a Benadryl, animals have allergies too but you can't give them as much as you would take because the pill to body ratio is a factor

Yes he could have gotton into a fight but then again he could have been stung by a bee and having an alergic reaction. I would call your local Vet and have him checked out because you never know if it may be something worse.

I agree with your views. Your cat might have fought with some other animal or snake without your notice. Keep a watch on it and take to a vetenary surgeon.
