What should I know about pruning English holly shrubs?

Cut out any dead limbs or any branches that are long and spindley. Experts say that pruning should be done right behind the new leaf buds when any limbs or branches are removed so that the bush will fill in during the next growing season.

Because the flowers of the English Holly shrubs are determined on the growth of the previous season you should prune by shortening the new shoots from that season before they get to full growth. If you don't do it this way then the new growth will cover the berries up.

I usually prune mine in Winter but I do live in the Gulf Coast so think between 50 and 60 F weather. You should not prune the lower branches at all but allow them to branch to the ground. Should never prune them during the summer or hot weather.
