Don't fear mixing wood colors - you can do it with ease, just make sure the styles of the furniture goes together. Don't mix country and modern, for example.
I would recommend mixing wood colors, just be smart about it, don't be mixing cherries with oaks, but cherries and walnuts and like darks or lights work well.
