The first thing you need to know is that cooking something fancy or rarely heard-of is not a good idea. Cook something that is familar and something that you think everyone will enjoy in general. Something strange might be your favorite dish, but no for everyone else. Cooking a dish like chicken or spaghetti is fine.

First you note down what to cook for those 20 people. Let it be simple and east to prepare. Never go for a new dish trial. Have you cooked for 4 people? Multiply it by 5. Reduce the amount if there are more items. List the ingredients for each dish. Peeling, cutting etc. can be done the previous day itself.

you should figure out the general consensus of what everyone will or will not eat. Dont make too many main dishes but have lots of sides and bread.

If you are cooking for twenty people make sure that you find out what serving sizes you need for what you are cooking. You will need to cook 20 servings of everything you make, or even make a little extra just in case.

You should aim for something like ham/fish with rice/pasta and vegetables. Be sure to keep the vegetables aside from the meat or fish to please vegetarians.
