In order to give roots time to settle and develop, plant before cold season arrives. Put mulch around the tree base, adding extra when it gets colder. Prune after flowers bloom and water only if soil is dry. Make sure magnolia has a good drainage system.

Plant after stormy season such as strong winds and frosts, as the root system takes time to grow. Mulch in a 2 foot wide circle and add more at the beginning of cold times. Prune after flowering and keep watered.

Put two foot ring of mulch around base after planting. Put extra mulch at two inch depth when your cold season starts. Use an 8-8-8 balanced fertalizer when roots established.

It is best to plant Japanese magnolias before winter; by digging mulch 4 inches deep the plant's root system will be protected all winter long. Fertilize Japanese magnolias in late winter. An excellent time for pruning is right after the tree's blooms flowers. Japanese magnolias require regular watering.

Treat it very delicately. Make sure you water daily. But no more than 1/2 a cup for these delicate plants. They can die very quickly. So expose to the right conditions.

You need to get a book that explains to you about the specific plant you have questions on that way as things come up you can look them right up and take care of them right away so they do not effect the growth of your plant or it's plant health.
