Timing should be considered when planting. It needs to be done after the windy, stormy season but before the frost of winter. It's roots take a while to establish themselves. Protecting the plant from weeds and the frost is important, which can be accomplished with a thick layer of mulch around the base.

Plant it after storm season or prior to winter cold to lessen root damage. Mulch two feet around it, 4 inches deep and feed in late winter.

Its a hardy tree, so as long as you don't live in a cold climate it should grow well. If your area freezes too hard in the winter, or stays below freezing for long periods, it wont survive well. Other then that, water and fertilizer to keep it healthy.

Yes, you need to take special care for Japanese Magnolia because different cultivars have different needs. You need to be specific to provide soil and water and mulch around the base of the tree and try to add extra mulch. Provide fertilizer to your Japanese magnolia i late winter and prune your tree after its flowers bloom.
