The red-tailed hawk is indigenous to the North American continent, east of the Rocky Mountains, from northern Florida in the south through Alberta to Nova Scotia. These birds prefer forests, particularly near trails and wetlands. Preferred foods are large insects, amphibians, small mammals and other birds. These birds practice 'kiting' – gliding on thermal drafts while they search for prey.

The red-tailed broad-winged hawk is commonly found circling above the southwestern United States. It can be easily differentiated from a red-shouldered hawk by the distinctive red color of its tail.
