Immediately go to the side of the road and turn off engine. The main helpful thing you can do right away is to let it cool down.

Check the fluid level and color/smell of the fluid. If fluid is dark or smells burnt, change the fluid and filter. If metal is in the fluid then it is probably a torque converter gone bad. Also make sure you are driving in 2 HI

you need to flush the trans fluid with some new fluid, this is best done with an exchange machine at a shop, though you can just drain it.

Check the transmission fluid level. If ok, then you can try changing the transmission fluid and filter checking for clutch material in the used fluid.

You should identify the reason for overheating in the long term. If this overheating happens while you're on the road, however, you should down shift, causing your engine to run faster and more transmission oil to be circulated. This will in turn cool the transmission. You could also try reducing the weight load on the vehicle.

You should pull over immediately and allow your truck to cool down. If this is a reoccuring problem install a tranmission cooler.
