First, you must determine if your stomach is hurting due to an overindulgence with food. If that is the case, then simply take over-the-counter stomach medicine, such as Pepto Bismal. Second, is it actually your abdominal muscles that are hurting, from physical activity. In that case, take it easy and stretch it out. If neither of these, see a doctor.

Drugs that reduce or neutralize gastric acid are most often prescribed. Histamine H2 antagonists such as cimetidine, ranitidine, famotidine, and nizatidine are useful. For severe symptoms or many cases of erosive or ulcerative esophagitis, proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole, pantoprazole, or esomeprazole are needed. Acid suppressants may be taken continuously or on demand depending on symptom severity.

If it is a common stomach ache, the best treatment is to take an over the counter antacid. If the stomach ache is associated with a fever over 101, has caused you to throw up more than a few times, or seems worse than normal, seek medical treatment.

Taking an antihistamine can help a stomache ache. Alleries to food need to be neutralized and a hurting stomach can be the first in a series of aches that are related to the stomach. It starts at the stomache but then can lead to headache and hives or tiredness. Irritability may follow.

If there is no fever, lie down and put a warm compress on your stomach. If there is a fever, call the doctor.
