If the tear is not that severe the physician would likely advice you to control the pain by cold therapy or cryotherapy. Second is pain medications such as ibuprofen and naproxen. For stiffness, use a heating pad for 10 to 20 minutes. Knee braces are also a great help for comfort and support.

When a person has been diagnosed with a meniscus tear, the doctor will decide on treatment depending on how severe the tear is. The physician may advise the patient to rest the knee for several weeks, prescribe anti-inflammatory medication and use cold compresses. If the knee does not heal, the person may need an arthroscopic repair along with physical therapy.

R. I. C. E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation), is a good rule of thumb for any muscle injury. Ibuprofin or other anti-inflammatory medication can also help reduce swelling. Avoid activities that cause pain or put undue stress to the knees. Consider visiting an acupuncturist. If pain continues, consult a sports physician.

Ice your knee down to help minimize swelling. You need to see a specialist and more than likely they will want to do orthroscopic surgery to repair the tear.

If the tear is bad enough, or you have good insurance, they can do a surgery to repair it, which is the best option. Otherwise, all you can do is rehab and physical therapy. Physical therapy must be done every day, and is painful, but worth the time and effort.
