Overgrown shrubs need to be pruned regularly if you want to keep them. You should cut them back to the desired height, making sure that there is ample foliage for regrowth. If they are tall and you want them to be lower, they will take at least one full year to regrow after a severe cutting.

You can either prune back the shrubs, depending on what plants you have, or remove them and re-landscape the area with better suited selections. Certain shrubs do not respong well to severe pruning.

If the present shrubs are too large to trim back as desired, then they will need to be removed and replaced.
