It should be light brown or even yellow in color. It should be soft but not runny. On average, a breastfed newborn will have up to five small bowel movements in a day with no effort or pain. The smell is not very strong, usually has almost a hint of sweetness to it.

A newborn's stool will usually be either a shade of dark green or black. This is because of substances that build up in the child's body before it is born. If the stool becomes too watery, you should speak with your doctor to make sure that the child is getting the correct amount of nutrients in its milk.

Because breast milk is easily digested, the stool should be soft or even loose. The color should be somewhat light. A green tint would denote infection.

Breast-fed babies have frequent bowel movements and require diaper changes often. Their poop is thin, seedy and kind of brownish-yellow. It can be quite runny and messy, but that's completely normal.
