It should be light brown or even yellow in color. It should be soft but not runny. On average, a breastfed newborn will have up to five small bowel movements in a day with no effort or pain. The smell is not very strong, usually has almost a hint of sweetness to it.

A newborn's stool will usually be either a shade of dark green or black. This is because of substances that build up in the child's body before it is born. Breast-fed babies have frequent bowel movements and require diaper changes often. Their poop is thin, seedy and kind of brownish-yellow. It can be quite runny and messy, but that's completely normal.
