Hormones act as messengers between cells. For example, hormones secreted in the brain can connect to proteins on the surface of sex cells, cause a conformational change of part of the protein inside the cell, which relays messages inside the cell. Chemicals can also act as messengers, such as the chemicals that change the energy potentials to convey neural messages.

One way of regulation of the activities of body cells are hormones. For example release of adrenalin produced by adrenal glands induces dilation of blood vessels. Similarly release of insulin causes muscle and liver cells to take up glucose from blood. On the other hand the activities of nerve cells are regulated by electrical signals.
