No, you aren't required to have an iPad, iPhone, or any type of iDevice, but eBooks are most certainly compatible with them. eBooks are simply online books, meaning they can be read using any device connected to the internet, whether it be a computer, smartphone, or the all new Kindle eBook reader.

Ebooks can be read on a lot of devices. Any computer that has pdf reading software can read them. They do make device specifically for reading ebooks on the go like the Kindle. These are much cheaper than the iPad but will only read ebooks and not much else. So you have several reading options.
