Some gaming sites such as Yahoo! games you can play things like board games, pictionary and card games for free and chat with the players. Another option is online shooters (such as call of duty 4) or RPGs (such as world of warcraft) which have a chat capability, although the people in those aren't quite so friendly.

Yahoo chess allows you to chat with the opponent while you are playing. The bad news is that if you chat too much, it will effect your concentration and hurt your chess game. But it is interesting to ask people where they are from and find out about players around the world.

I know that many diffeent poker forums allow you to chat with fellow players as you're playing the game. For example, Full Tilt Poker offers this feature, and also lets you play for free if you select the 'play money' option. AOL games also offer this feature, and many online chess sites do as well.

Most online games are online now. The big one right now is Call Of Duty: Modern Warfar Two. Others include NFL Madden, Socom Navy Seals, Halo, NBA 2K10, and many more. They even let you chat with the people your playing with if you have a head set.

All games that go online for either the PS3 or the XBOX 360 allow chatting between different players. What you'll need to do is purchase a system and a headset compatible with it. After making an online account, you'll just need to sign in and start playing. A good game to start with is Call of Duty.
