What kind of wood should I look for if I want dark furniture?

Mahogany is an excellent choice for the purposes you describe. Walnut or Wenge are other options, however, they may be more difficult to find as they are not as commonly sold.

dark furniture can come in many diffrent finishes. Some of the most popular ones are of coffee colors like cappacino, Expresso, And there are many diffrent shades of oak from lighter to darker colors

Walnut is a nice durable wood for furniture, and it comes in dark brown to almost chocolate. It is a good tree to use because walnut trees thrive almost everywhere.

The classic one is mahogany. You could also look for oak, walnut, chestnut or cherry. Ebony is very dark but can be rare and expensive.
