It sounds like you have a red-eared slider, one of the most common pet shop turtles. They are plentiful in the southern US and make great pets. If the color bar on the face were white or yellow, you would have a Map turtle, which is usually caught wild, rather than raised for a pet like the Sliders.

The species of turtle you have is called a red-eared slider (Trachemys Scripta Elegans). They can grow to be quite large. Males have much longer exaggerated nails on the front limbs while females typically have shorter nails on the front limbs. during growth stages they will shed thin layers of their shell called "skoots. I cannot be certain without actually seeing the animal, but it sounds to me like you have red eared slider turtle. They are generally small, and the small red lines on the sides of their face. They like some water, but require sufficient land to survive. They are generally mellow and don't bite unless provoked.

That would most likely be a Red Ear Turtle. In some parts of the US it's called a "Red Ear Slider" and is a semi-aquatic turtle. They live wild throughout most of the USA, and makes an excellent pet as they are very easy to keep in captivity.
