The prenatal tests are done to determine the health of your baby. It can help identify problems that may endanger you and/or your child. It may also identify if there are any congenital, genetic, or chromosomal problems. Fetal abnormalities, such as heart problems can also be detected through these tests.

They are just looking to see if you are doing alright while carrying the baby and if the baby is developing correctly. Cause if something goes wrong with you or the baby, it could be fatal to one or both of you. So it is very important that you go and take those tests. Learned that the hard way.

Many doctors screen for birth defects and illnesses that can cause harm to both mother and child because some can be repaired while the child is still in the womb.

In the initual bloos screening they look for anything that would affect your pregnancy: anemia, sexually transmitted diseases, blood sugar, hormone levels etc. Later there are tests for the health of the baby like the alpha fetoprotien, which will check for initial signs of genetic defects.
