Originally tithing was commanded in the Bible to pay,usually livestock or grain or 10% of one's income or production, for religious leaders to use for themselves or for the poor.
People use it to give a certain percentage of their income to their churches or charitable organizations. Some of the organizations help people who need food, housing and clothes.
