I hadn't noticed the bump until about a week ago. What could be the cause, is it serious?

If your chicken has a bump on its foot between its claw, it is probably Bumble Foot, which is an infection that makes it hard for the chicken to walk

This could be a staphinfection called Bumblefoot. It could also cause feather loss as the bird moults under the stress of a serious infection. You should immediately see a vet to have this looked at.
