It is really just a baby root canal. The 'pulp' is the nerve of a primary tooth in a child. The nerve will be removed the same way it is with an adult. After removing the nerve, a crown or a cap will be placed on top to cover the remaining tooth.

Therapeutic pulpotomy is the surgical removal of the coronal part of the pulp leaving behind the radicular pulp intact followed by the placement of a medicament to maintain the vitality of the radicular pulp. Normally the medicaments that are placed are calcium hydroxide dressing which promotes healing and formocresol dressing which sanitizes and fixes the pulp.

This can be painful at times and more importantly, expensive. Get a second opinion from another dentist if they think this is necessary.
