What is the safest way to have children carve pumpkins?

You can buy pumpkin carving kits that have a child-safe cutting tool. Another option is to have your child draw a design and then use a push pin to make a cutting "guide" on the pumpkin for mom or dad to follow with a knife.

After you make the top hole, let them do the scooping. Once a design for the pumpkin face is chosen, you do the bulk of it, then have them help finish. Little children will usually get bored doing all the work anyway. If they're older, they can normally safely handle doing a lot of the carving.
