The relationship changes periodically throughout the series. They are more like contemporaries than partners. First Sakura thought Naruto was an idiot. Soon the two gain an understanding of one another. Sakura eventually strives to be alongside Naruto on his quest to bring Sasuke back. She eventually becomes protective of Naruto.
