It seems to add too much confusion to me.

They're so people get daylight at the same time - eg getting up at 7am and it's light, and going to bed at 11pm and it's dark.

Time zones exist to ensure that time (daylight) is relatively equal in all areas. If America had no time zones, it could be 5:00 in the evening in California and still light outside, but completely dark in New York.
