What is the purpose of the earth's plates?

They don't really have a purpose. They're "plates" because they have a defined boundaries made by formation and destruction zones. They move because they're pushed around by new growth.

The solid crust of earth is not like a shell, rather it is broken into a number of pieces. These travel horizontally and vertically on soft mantle of the core.
