The most common joist size is 2x6 16 inches on center. If you entertain lots of people, I would opt For a stronger premium deck use 2x8 joist and space them 12 inches on center, this will hold virtually anything.

The joist is like the skeleton of the deck. the closer the boards are the stronger the deck. The most common joist size is 2x6 16 inches on center. If you plan on entertaining several people, using a 2x8 joist and space them 12 inches on center, this will hold virtually anything.

Typically, you'll use 2x6, 2x8, or 2x10 size timbers for deck joists, spacing them apart 16" O.C., or 'on center'. Be sure to check your local building codes.

Be sure to check with your city inspector for proper joist sizes in your city or town. You will need a permit anyway and knowing what you need ahead of time will save you much aggravation.

Two by sixes through two by tens are the best sizes for the joist. They will all shrink and fit like they are supposed to after a while and the framing will be the same size/

The size of your joist all depends on the size of the wood you are using for your deck. The most common sizes of joists are 2x6, 2x8 and 2x10.

The proper joint size is going to be two by fours. they are the best and when combined they are extremely tough. Hope this helps you out with the deck framing.
