What is the problem in my yard if the sod is brown?

Is it just dead?

It could just need some water. There may be little hills or dips in your lawn that result in over or underwatering of those spots. Sometimes it turns brown because the ground there on is compacted. To solve this you need to fork over the area and the roots of the new sod will have a chance to take root.

If the sod is brown it needs to be watered, I would water every evening just before the sun goes down.

Sod that is left on pallets too long before installation can be subject to bacteria. Sod requires quick installation after purchasing. Prep work includes tilling the soil to a depth of 4 to 6 inches for proper root growth. If it lawn grass that you are talking about, you may have pests or too much heat.
